Working Channels
What you will learn
Choose a working channel from an accepted call, station instruction or current local source instead of guessing from memory or silence.
A working channel carries the useful conversation after contact. Its suitability depends on the service, participants and current allocation—not simply whether it sounds quiet.
Inter-ship, coast-station, port, traffic-service and marina communications do not all share one universal working channel. The station, DSC acknowledgement, current almanac, harbour guide, chart note or official local notice should identify the route that applies to the call.
A quiet channel may be quiet because it is reserved, paired for a coast service, used only at certain times or outside the ship station's intended purpose. Choosing it by ear can interfere with traffic you cannot hear or produce a call the intended station cannot receive.
Before arrival, record the published channel beside the station name and the reason for calling. During the exchange, repeat a channel-change instruction if necessary, switch, confirm the display and listen before transmitting again.
Prepare the harbour call before entering the approach
A pilot book from last season and the harbour's current notice show different working channels.
1. Use the current authority
Prefer the harbour's current official information and note its date, service name and channel.
2. Brief the call
Prepare vessel identity, present position and concise request before the workload increases.
3. Verify the move
Read the channel on the radio after any instruction and listen before transmitting.
Sense check: A memorised number without a current station or service attached is not a verified channel plan.
Common mistake or limitation
- Treating a channel remembered from another harbour as a national marina standard.
- Selecting the quietest channel without checking its allocation or service.
- Changing channel while distracted and transmitting without reading the display.
