Module 5 - Routine Calls

Unanswered, Garbled, And Repeated Calls

Active recall

Section 9 of 10

Explain the main idea from unanswered, garbled, and repeated calls in your own words.

If a call is unanswered, do not fill the channel with immediate repetitions. Listen, allow time for the other station to respond, repeat the call at sensible intervals, and check the channel, power, volume, and squelch. If another ship's MMSI is unknown, the current MCA small-craft path is low-power voice on Channel 16, then Channel 13 if there is no response.

For a garbled message, identify the station where possible and use SAY AGAIN, adding the word, group, position, or part required. Use CORRECTION to amend your own error. Never say REPEAT for a routine request to hear words again because in some services it can be associated with repeated fire.

Key points

  • Listen and check setup before calling again.
  • Use SAY AGAIN and specify the missing part when possible.
  • Use CORRECTION for your own error.
  • After contact, move routine traffic to the appropriate working channel.
