Self-Recording And Review
What you will learn
Score a recording against an observable radio-procedure rubric and choose one specific improvement.
Self-review works when it checks defined evidence. 'Sounded fine' and 'felt nervous' are impressions, not a diagnosis.
Before playback, write the scenario's required fields. During the first listen, check content only: priority, station, own identity, position/time, problem, request, relevant people or equipment and closing proword. During the second listen, check delivery: clipped opening, pace, grouping, hesitation, microphone distance and PTT release.
Mark each field present, unclear or missing. Choose the highest-risk defect, state the repair in one sentence and record the complete transmission again. If the critical facts are present but delivery is uneven, correct only one delivery behaviour at a time so the comparison stays interpretable.
Do not self-certify practical competence from a clean playback. A browser recording contains no real channel congestion, signal loss, unfamiliar station voice, vessel motion or assessor observation. Use it to arrive better prepared for recognised instruction and practical assessment.

Use one diagnosis per retry
Playback shows a correct Pan-Pan message, but the position is rushed and the learner also dislikes their voice.
1. Prioritise
Treat the hard-to-understand position as the operational defect; voice preference is not the target.
2. Define the repair
Pause before the position and separate degree, minute, decimal and hemisphere groups.
3. Compare
Record the complete call again and review the same position field.
Sense check: The retry should produce evidence about the chosen repair, not a vague hope that everything sounds better.
Common mistake or limitation
- Reviewing only confidence or accent instead of operational content.
- Trying to change pace, wording, order and microphone technique in one retry.
- Treating browser playback as evidence of real-radio or official-assessment performance.
