Exam Rehearsal Standard
What you will learn
Use simulator evidence to prepare for recognised SRC teaching and assessment without claiming an official pass.
A strong rehearsal combines explanation, correct radio set-up, a complete spoken exchange and transfer to an unfamiliar scenario. The official assessment remains separate.
For each scenario, explain the priority, channel or DSC route and the information that must be passed. Set the training radio correctly, complete the call, listen to the reply and respond to the next turn. Green phrase chips show only that one authored sequence matched; they do not assess a real set, interference, listening accuracy or all syllabus tasks.
Raise the standard by using an unfamiliar scenario without the model visible. Recover facts from that scenario rather than reusing Compass Rose details from memory. If you miss, follow the lesson link, state the misconception and retry later. A score without an explanation is weaker evidence than a corrected decision you can justify.
The RYA SRC route includes recognised training and a separate practical and written examination. This self-guided companion supports revision but does not issue the SRC, replace the published assessment or prove practical competence. Set-specific controls, live-radio discipline and examiner judgement must be learned and demonstrated in their proper setting.
Worked example
A learner completes the familiar sinking Mayday perfectly, then receives a new scenario about an unanswered DSC distress alert from another vessel.
- 1Classify the learner's role: receiver or relay station, not casualty vessel.
- 2Use the new casualty identity, position and facts; do not repeat the familiar Compass Rose message.
- 3Explain what must be heard or observed before acknowledgement or relay and what listening watch follows.
Sense check: If only the memorised vessel name and coordinates can be produced, the call script has been learned but the decision has not transferred.
Use a readiness claim that the evidence supports
A learner has passed every simulator arrangement but has never operated a training radio or completed a recognised assessment.
1. Credit the evidence
They can recall several authored procedure sequences and interpret simulator feedback.
2. Name the gap
Real controls, listening, speech under radio conditions and formal performance remain untested.
3. Choose the next action
Use the result to target recognised instruction and practical rehearsal, not to claim certification.
Sense check: A trustworthy product limits its claim to the observed revision task and names what still needs another setting and assessor.
Common mistake or limitation
- Treating all-green phrase chips as an SRC pass.
- Rehearsing only familiar facts instead of transferring the procedure.
- Using this simulator instead of recognised instruction, practical training or assessment.
