Module 9 - GMDSS & Safety Equipment
Where VHF Fits In GMDSS
For small craft, VHF DSC sits mainly in Sea Area A1 thinking: communication within range of VHF coast stations. It is powerful, but it is not global and it depends on aerial, power, range, and correct setup.
GMDSS is a system of alerting, communication, locating, and safety information tools. A good skipper understands what each item can and cannot do.
Key points
- VHF DSC is line-of-sight and range-limited.
- EPIRB/PLB satellite alerts need registration.
- SART/AIS SART help rescuers locate survival craft or casualty equipment.
- Navtex and MSI provide safety information where fitted and available.
