Module 9 - GMDSS & Safety Equipment
GMDSS, Sea Areas, SAR, And MSI
Active recall
Section 8 of 10
Explain the main idea from gmdss, sea areas, sar, and msi in your own words.
GMDSS combines alerting, communication, locating, and Maritime Safety Information. Sea Area A1 is within VHF coast-station radiotelephone coverage where continuous DSC alerting is available; A2 is within MF coast-station coverage with continuous DSC alerting. Small-craft VHF study needs A1 knowledge and awareness that other sea areas need other systems.
Rescue Coordination Centres organise search and rescue, using coast, ship, aircraft, and on-scene communications. An alert starts the chain; continuing voice traffic, accurate position, listening watch, EPIRB/SART signals, and MSI all support the response.
Key points
- A1 is defined by VHF coast-station DSC coverage, not a fixed distance from shore.
- A2 uses MF coast-station DSC coverage.
- RCCs coordinate SAR resources and communications.
- GMDSS is a system of complementary alerting, communication, locating, and information tools.
