Module 8 - Digital Selective Calling
False DSC Distress Alert
A false DSC distress alert must be cancelled promptly and clearly. The operator should cancel the alert on the set if possible, then broadcast an all-stations voice cancellation on Channel 16 with the vessel identity, MMSI, position if needed, and confirmation that the alert was sent in error.
The point is to prevent search and rescue resources responding to a false alarm while also keeping the channel clear for real distress traffic.
Key points
- Cancel on the DSC set if the equipment allows.
- Make a voice cancellation on Channel 16.
- Identify the vessel and MMSI.
- State the distress alert was sent in error.
- Log and report as instructed.
