Module 8 - Digital Selective Calling
Distress Alert Reception And Acknowledgement
When a DSC distress alert is received, stop any transmission that could interfere and maintain a listening watch on Channel 16. The voice distress message should follow.
Coastguard or coast stations normally acknowledge and coordinate. A vessel should not rush to acknowledge digitally; if no acknowledgement is heard after a short interval and you can help, voice acknowledgement on Channel 16 may be appropriate.
Key points
- Cease interfering transmissions.
- Listen on Channel 16.
- Wait for coast station coordination where possible.
- Use voice acknowledgement only when appropriate and useful.
