What the SRC Covers

The Marine Radio Short Range Certificate is the operator qualification associated with marine VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling equipment on UK flagged vessels. This revision guide helps you practice the knowledge and spoken procedure, but it does not issue a certificate.

The official route still involves appropriate RYA SRC training or eligible prior radio certification, followed by an SRC exam at an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

Course, Exam, and Fees

The RYA describes the SRC course as 10 hours plus exam time. The exam includes a written theory paper and a practical assessment using marine VHF radios.

The RYA exam fee is paid separately from most course or revision products. Check the latest RYA page and your chosen training centre before booking.

Ship Radio Licensing

Do not confuse the operator certificate with the licence for the radio equipment. A vessel radio installation and a portable handheld radio can have different licensing arrangements.

For revision, remember the practical link: licensing provides identities such as call signs and MMSI numbers, while the SRC prepares you to use the equipment correctly.

Licence, Certificate, And Equipment Are Different Things

Marine radio revision needs three separate boxes in your head: the radio equipment, the ship or portable radio licence that authorises the station, and the operator certificate that proves the person controlling the set is qualified.

The common learner error is to treat a vessel licence as permission for anyone to operate any set anywhere. In UK pleasure-vessel practice, the SRC is the usual certificate for VHF and VHF/DSC operation, while the radio licence identifies and authorises the equipment.

Ship Radio Versus Ship Portable

A fixed VHF/DSC set on a yacht is normally part of the vessel's ship radio station. A handheld used across several vessels needs different thinking, especially if it has DSC and an MMSI programmed into it.

For revision, remember the practical implication: a vessel MMSI identifies the vessel, while a portable arrangement identifies portable equipment under its own licensing conditions. That distinction matters when rescue services receive a digital alert.

The SRC is not only a terminology test. It checks whether you can choose the correct priority, channel or DSC function, then build a clear call under exam pressure.

A good revision answer explains why a procedure is correct. For example, Channel 70 is for DSC signalling, so a voice call on Channel 70 is wrong even if the traffic is urgent.

The exam habit is simple: keep identity details visible near the radio, know where the licence and certificate fit, and do not practice live DSC distress alerts outside authorised training conditions.

Operating Authority, Records, And Radio Secrecy

A licensed station must be controlled by, or used under the supervision of, an appropriately certificated operator. The ship radio licence authorises the station and equipment; the operator certificate authorises the person. Keep licence and identity details current and have the relevant documents available as required.

Radio traffic is not entertainment. Do not disclose or make use of correspondence that was not intended for you, except where action is required for distress or safety. False or deceptive distress transmissions, superfluous signals, indecent language, music, and unauthorised broadcasts are prohibited. A radio record or log should capture required distress and safety traffic and significant incidents according to the vessel's applicable rules and operating practice.

The Reference Information Behind A Radio Identity

Coast stations, ship stations, special-service stations, call signs, and MMSI assignments sit within national and international licensing records. In practice you use the vessel's licensed particulars and the current station information supplied for the area; you do not guess an MMSI from a vessel name.

The SRC requires awareness that official station lists and national manuals exist. Local channel allocations and service availability can change, so verify them from current almanacs, harbour directions, Coastguard information, or the service provider before transmitting.
