Module 7 - Urgency & Safety Calls
Common mistakes and fixes
The most likely mistake in this module is: Using Mayday for urgency traffic or Pan-Pan for a general navigation warning.
Fix it by slowing the call down before pressing PTT. Decide the priority, prepare the essential information, then transmit clearly and briefly.
Using Mayday for urgency traffic or Pan-Pan for a general navigation warning.
It can delay help, block a channel, or confuse the receiving station.
Fix: Stop, identify the priority, and rebuild the call.
Missing position information
Rescue or assistance may be delayed.
Fix: Use latitude/longitude, bearing and distance, or a clear place name.
Talking too long
Other stations cannot break in easily.
Fix: Use short transmissions and listen between them.
Not listening after transmitting
Instructions or acknowledgements may be missed.
Fix: Release PTT and write down the response.
