Module 6 - Distress & Mayday
Received Mayday, Mayday Relay, And Distress Silence
If you receive a DSC distress alert or voice Mayday, stop transmissions that could interfere and keep a listening watch on Channel 16. Coastguard or a coast station normally coordinates the response.
If no acknowledgement is heard after a short interval and you are able to assist, a vessel may acknowledge by voice with RECEIVED MAYDAY and state what help it can give. If the distress message needs passing to a coast station, use Mayday Relay procedure.
Key points
- Cease interfering transmissions.
- Listen on Channel 16.
- Use RECEIVED MAYDAY only when appropriate.
- Use Mayday Relay to pass a distress message when needed.
- Seelonce Mayday controls distress silence; Seelonce Feenee ends it.
