Module 6 - Distress & Mayday

Mayday Threshold

Mayday is for grave and imminent danger to a vessel or person where immediate assistance is required. It is serious traffic and should not be diluted by routine breakdowns or convenience calls.

If the situation is serious but not immediately life-threatening, Pan-Pan may be the right priority. The decision is about danger, urgency, and the assistance needed now.

Key points

  • Grave and imminent danger.
  • Immediate assistance required.
  • Use high power and Channel 16 for voice Mayday.
  • Use DSC distress alert first if available and appropriate.
