Module 8 - Digital Selective Calling
Position, Received Messages, Tests, And False Alerts
Active recall
Section 9 of 9
Explain the main idea from position, received messages, tests, and false alerts in your own words.
Confirm that the DSC display has a current position and UTC time from the connected navigation receiver. If the interface fails, enter position and time manually and update them as required by the set instructions. Know how to review a received DSC message before acting: identity, category, position, time, and nominated channel all matter.
Test DSC only with the equipment's approved test function and the correct test identity or procedure; never press the distress control to test it. If a VHF DSC distress alert is sent accidentally, reset the equipment immediately, use its cancellation function if available, change to Channel 16, and broadcast to All Stations with vessel name, call sign and MMSI cancelling the false alert. Follow the equipment and rescue-coordination instructions.
Key points
- Check automatic position and UTC; know the manual-entry fallback.
- Review the complete received message before changing channel or replying.
- Use the approved DSC test function, never a live distress alert.
- False alert: reset/cancel, Channel 16 All Stations voice cancellation, full identity.
